FREE Piano Worksheets: Teaching Students C Major and C Minor Chords

Are you ready to learn a fun and simple way to teach students C major and C minor chords? With these free piano worksheets, your students will understand how to play these concepts easily and know how to read it in notes! Oh, and I forgot to mention- they’ll also have loads of fun while doing it!

Introducing the Cascade Piano Chords Book:

I’m so excited to announce that these free worksheets are part of the second book I’ve ever written out of all my piano method book series! I’m in the process of creating the Chords 1 Lesson Book and eventually, there will be more! Each lesson book will refer back to The Cascade Piano Theory Book

At the time of writing this blog, I only had these two worksheets, and those are the ones you can get for free! Altogether, I’ve created three pieces. One of the pieces will teach students C major, the other will teach C minor, and the last piece is up to you and your student’s imagination! I’m not the best at creating lyrics so I’d love to see what some of you come up with during your lessons so I can feature your piece in the next book!

Free Piano Worksheets | What you’ll need:

Okay, I guess it’s not completely free but I can’t express to you enough how much easier it will be to teach your students notes once they have NoteMatch: The Piano Reading Tool!!

You’ll obviously need the Piano Theory Book that compliments the worksheets. Your students will love this book as well because it’s so colorful and fun compared to other piano theory books!

Other than that, you need a pencil, markers, and of course, the worksheets!

The Free Piano Worksheets: How they work

The reason I’m creating these worksheets outside of the Piano Theory Book is that I want to create “side” pieces for every theory concept I teach to my students. C major and C minor are common chords that I start early on because it’s super easy to teach when you focus on finding it on the piano and play, without factoring in reading notes. Well… that’s where these worksheets come in! They will help your students read the notes, too!!

Each worksheet has a similar teaching method, so I’m going to give step-by-step instructions on how to teach the C Major worksheet and then if you’d like to hear my silly teaching skills on the others, watch the workshop video that covers each sheet!

(Start the video at 8:51 to learn the C Minor Worksheet. Start the video at 14.05 for the “extra” piece).

How to teach the C Major Chord Worksheet:

Step 1:
Start out by teaching your students how to find the C chord on the piano. Once they know how to play it, then you introduce the worksheet which shows them how it looks on sheet music with real notes!

Step 2:
Explain it to them that the movement they did with their right hand is how it looks on sheet music and then allows them to trace the treble clef C major chord. Do the same thing in the bass clef!

Step 3:
Ask them how it translates onto NoteMatch! Start by having them color on the worksheet “paper” NoteMatch and then onto the real-life NoteMatch. They are going to LOVE coloring!

Step 4:
Now it’s time to have your students analyze the piece! Ask them how many C chords they see and have them count it out! Then, explain the difference between blocked and rolled C chords and count the bass clef C chords. In their brains, it starts to make sense and doesn’t seem so overwhelming, yet they’re reading notes fully and understanding it!

Step 5:
Time to hit those keys and start playing!
